The Playa del Carmen Reefs

Turtles, rays and eagle rays on a current that does the swimming for you. Ten minutes from shore.

Playa's reefs sit on the same current that runs up to Cozumel, which means almost everything here is drift diving. You do not swim the site — you fly over it, and the guide manages the pace.

Tortugas and Sabalos are the shallow, easy ones. Barracuda and Pared Verde run deeper with more structure. Moc-Che sits in between and is where we see turtles most consistently.

Because the boat ride is short and the current does the work, this is the dive that fits a half day. It is also the second tank on our bull shark trips in winter.
